Beds Without Breakfast is a grandmother-led initiative which encourages Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign members to connect with each other and support the Stephen Lewis Foundation (SLF) while travelling.  Since 2007, grandmother “hosts” have welcomed other members of the Grandmothers Campaign into their homes for short stays and then donate the payment they receive from guests to the SLF.  This initiative is open to members of grandmother groups, regular SLF volunteers and, in some cases, their family and friends.  It is not open to members of the general public.

My husband and I were on a road trip to Vancouver Island in October and stayed in 3 different BWBs- Kamloops, West Vancouver and Genelle (near Nelson).  We made new friends, had lovely accommodation and are keen to repeat the experience in Victoria and in Ontario on future trips.  As one host said “It’s a win/win/win, the Foundation gets a donation, the host gets a tax receipt and the visiting folks get a very reasonably priced place to stay!”  The host sets the price and it varies, usually $35-$60.  One of our members is a host in Calgary; you could also consider doing that.

To find out more, see a map of locations or inquire with individual hosts, visit the Beds Without Breakfast page on the Grandmothers to Grandmothers website at
Also remember you don’t have to be a grandmother or even have grey hair to be part of our movement!
