OTHER EVENTS

Ujamaa Grandmas (UG) members have many creative and lucrative ideas for new and ongoing fundraisers. To contribute to the success of our events, the Sales and Finance Committee, with direction from the Board, has created a framework for use in planning fundraisers.

This new project FORM will assist in the successful planning of future UG fundraising events.

  • The first of these forms must be completed and submitted 8 to 10 weeks prior to any upcoming event.
  • Following the first forms, there are additional forms to guide you through the planning process.
  • These additional forms should be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to your event.
  • Once we are all familiarized with the process, these forms will be a great help in the planning of our events!

EXAMPLES OF SUBMITTED FUNDRAISING IDEAS

KNIT ME BAGS

KNIT ME BAGS

Knit Me Bags ready to go out in public

This initiative was originally part of  2016 Grandmothers to Grandmothers 10th Anniversary Committee. Its purpose is to create awareness of the Campaign as well as its support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Colourful red and white bags that hold instructions for simple knitting projects, the needles and the yarn to complete them along with our brochure, business cards, a SLF postcard and a donation envelope are left in public places. The message suggests that the person picking it up can make the project to keep or return it to be part of BAGS, BABIES & BEYOND in the Fall.

Usually, in conjunction with Knit in Public Day, Knit Me bags are distributed to libraries, and knitting shops. Several of the knitted items were donated to us for BB&B as well as at least one donation envelope. The scope of the awareness is never fully known as this initiative reaches a wide demographic and donations are sometimes sent directly to the foundation. The committee is small but enthusiastic in promoting the work of UJAMAA, the Campaign and SLF.

VILLAGE CALGARY PARTNERSHIP

VILLAGE CALGARY PARTNERSHIP

Every year, Villages Calgary hosts a sale event for which they share the proceeds with UG. Watch the calendar for this annual fall event.

BANFF TEA COMPANY

BANFF TEA COMPANY

A batch of tea cozies ready to go to The Banff Tea Company.

Between 2014 and early 2018, a small group of knitters, wet felters, and needle felters supplied the Banff Tea Company with knitted and felted mountain-themed tea cozies.

Cozies have been adorned with hikers, skiers, climbers, paddlers, mountain goats, bears, elk, big-horned sheep, bison, beavers, chipmunks, lynx, rabbits, grey jays, wolves, flowers and skunks. Yes, skunks.

There is no way of knowing how far these cozies have traveled but it is certain that they can be found round the globe. This partnership raised more than $4800 from the sale of more than 150 cozies. That’s a lot of hot tea!

WALK IN THE PARK

WALK IN THE PARK

Since 2010, Stephen Lewis Foundation has encouraged grandmother groups to participate in an annual group STRIDE in solidarity with our African sisters. Our own UG Stride spin-off originated in 2014 as Walk In The Park. Rain, shine or snow, a group gathered in a Calgary park twice weekly for a one-hour walk. Cost of each walk was a toonie which was donated to SLF and credited to UG. By 2016, the group collectively walked 3300 Km. and donated $1,900 to the Foundation.
